Pushkin Bakery Review #2

Had some time before picking up my sister at the Sacramento airport so I stopped by Pushkin Bakery for a haul. Pushkin is a DEDICATED wheat/gluten free bakery. They now have a park-let with seating outside and serve sandwiches and hot foods (some food items contain diary). I opted for the dessert counter (which is gluten free and dairy free).

It was great to look over my previous review so I was less likely to order the same thing twice or order something I didn’t really care for.

TL;DR stick to the cupcakes, scones and cookies.

  • Strawberry rosemary cupcake ($3.75) – see review below
  • Strawberry rosemary scone ($2.90) – see review below
  • Chocolate crinkles ($2.99) – Delicious! see previous review
  • Brownie ($2.99) – see review below
  • Blueberry lemon scone ($2.90) – see review below
  • Dudes ($1.95) – These are amazing (PB & chocolate chips!) see previous review
  • Banana chocolate chunk muffin ($2.99) – see review below
  • Blueberry cobbler ($2.99) – see review below
  • Lemon bar ($2.99) – tart and very lemon flavored. The crust was a little grainy. Received this last time for free, probably won’t get this one again.

Strawberry Rosemary cupcake was pretty darn good! People who enjoy sweet and salty at the same time will enjoy this very much. It had a strong rosemary flavor accompanied by a salty topping frosting. It had one or two small chunks of real strawberry in the cake and a few pieces of rosemary leaves. Overall it was light and delicious.

Strawberry Rosemary Scone was unique and good. It tasted like pie dough, wasn’t a noticeable grainy texture like some other products of theirs. The combination of strawberries and rosemary is great! There were only a few chunks of strawberries and it had a rosemary flavor throughout.

Brownie fudgy, chocolate but so sad it’s grainy.

Blueberry Lemon Scone was good for a gluten free scone. It is dense, tastes like pie dough, not very sweet and has plump blueberries. It has a slight grainy texture.

Banana Chocolate Chunk Muffin tastes like chocolate chips with a mild banana flavor, but it’s not the typical moist banana bread that I’m accustom too, even when it’s made gluten free. It was dense and dry, almost grainy.

Blueberry Cobbler had plump blueberries throughout. The grainy flour was noticeable throughout which detracted from the experience of cobbler.

As you can see from the photos below, there were many other options to choose from. I don’t think you’ll go wrong by ordering anything here.

Blueberry Carrot Protein Smoothie

I impressed myself with the taste of this ‘thrown together’ smoothie. Used up left over carrots to account for the veggies to balance out the fruit, veggie, protein, omega3 protein smoothie. I like blueberries and this is the first time I’ve made a smoothie made mostly with blueberries. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

I put my carrots in a sealed plastic bag with a paper towel to keep them from going rubbery on me. I have not tried rubbery carrots in this smoothie, but I bet it would be a good use for them instead of putting them in the compost.

Ingredients:

1 cup Coconut Milk, Unsweetened, Vanilla (or milk of choice)
1 scoop Vega Vanilla Sport Protein Powder
1 tablespoon flaxseed (optional)
2 medium carrots, pealed and cleaned
2 cups Blueberries, Whole, Frozen
1 Banana, ripe, Frozen
1 cup Water (additional water to desired smoothness)

Chocolate chip peanut butter oat zucchini brownies (gluten free, dairy free)

Chocolate chip PB Oat Zucchini browniesOh my gosh, these are delicious. As you can see, I ate two before realizing I should photograph them.

What to do with one cup of frozen shredded zucchini? Not enough for zucchini bread or zucchini muffins.

I found this flour less zucchini brownie recipe and was about to put 1 cup of peanut butter into the mix when I decide that was just WAY too much peanut butter. Not for the flavor but because of how much fat and calories are in peanut butter. So I modified the recipe to include oats and an egg and less peanut butter. Next time I will reduce the sweetener or use baking Truvia.

The peanut butter flavor is mild and it’s so moist and fluffy (because of the egg addition). The oats and zucchini give it a healthy, “good for you” texture. I used a combination of pancake syrup and honey for the sweetener.

Little Black Dress (Flour Chylde Bakery)

Flour Chylde has a stand at the Mission farmer’s market every Thursday in San Francisco and whenever they have this Chocolate espresso brandy treat, it’s hard to resist not getting one, even if it’s to save for later (freezes well!).

A combination of bittersweet chocolates, espresso, and Brandy to produce fudge-like density with a blast of rich chocolate and only a hint of alcohol burn. This is a treat to savor each bite. I recommend eating it with a small fork. If it wasn’t so moist you would need a glass of milk to compliment it.

You will not be let down with this Little Black Dress treat from Flour Chylde.
